Proof-reading, Copy editing and Goodreads

I thought it was about time I gave an update on my progress with my fantasy novel but I wanted to write about another occurrence that has happened recently and will affect everything I write from here on.

There are a lot of bad things being said about Goodreads across the blogosphere and the literary industry and in some ways I can see why. There seems to be a minority of people out there that will take any and every opportunity to be abusive to other people for no reason. This is true in all walks of life but seems prevalent in on-line mediums as there is a sense of anonymity.

That said, I like the Goodreads site and write reviews for books that I have read. I recently discovered that there is also a Goodreads community where people of a like mind can connect and share their experiences, thoughts or just advertise their skills.

It was here I went one night while taking a break from the midnight typing frenzy and found the Beta Reader group. This is something that interested me. I already have two friends that read, and give criticism where they feel it is required, but I wanted to find out what someone I don’t know thought of my work.

Through this group I found an advert for a recently qualified proofreader and editor who I then contacted, explaining where I was at with my  book but not really expecting a reply. I was a bit surprised, but really happy, excited and nervous, when she replied offering to work with me and my manuscript such as it was.

To cut a long story short, I sent her all of my completed chapters and in less than a week had them returned to me re-formatted and edited with suggestions on where I am going wrong and/or right. I was really happy to see that there was less corrections to my grammar than I had originally feared (maybe I did learn something at school all those years ago).

Having to go back and read through earlier chapters has been a great help to me in planning my future chapters as I now remember things that I said were going to happen but haven’t happened yet and I have been able to fix continuity errors before they become a major problem.

I feel that having Hayley edit my work has once  again made writing more of an enjoyable experience as I now have her looking over my shoulder and keeping me on the straight and narrow so to speak.

I know that some people are of the mind that editing should only come after the writing is finished but as a first time writer I personally feel that Hayley’s guidance is and will continue to be of great assistance to me.

I am currently at just over the 70k word mark and I am aiming to write another 50k before this book is finished. I already have hopes for a book 2 and 3, and find myself lying in bed planning where the later books will take the reader.

Once again I would like to thank you for reading my rather long post.
